However, there are theories that before being caravansarai this used to be nestorian church or even buddist temple. This might be true due to inside organization of this place. Whatever it is, from 10th century and on this was caravan sarai (unusual one though - animals were staying outside and not inside) and it is one of the best saved sightseeing on Silk Road.
